The lived experience of intersex people in Malta


ABOUT ME AND THE PROJECT:


My name is Somya Dixit and I am a researcher at the School of Law and Government, Dublin City University. I am interested in the lived experiences of intersex people in Malta and Ireland. This research is being conducted as part of a large research program, “Intersex –New Interdisciplinary Approaches” (INIA) and will also contribute to my Ph.D. thesis. The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement.


WHAT IS THE RESEARCH ABOUT?


There is very little known about the lived experiences of intersex people and the problems they face in their day-to-day lives. There are not enough writings telling us about how the current legal system assists in ensuring the human rights of intersex people. The research aims to understand the experiences of intersex people and identify whether and how Irish and Maltese law guarantees the exercise of their human rights. Interviews with intersex people, potentially including intersex young people, and their parents can majorly contribute to this project and help us recommend changes in the current legal policies to ensure the human rights of intersex people.


WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM THE INTERVIEW?


The interview will involve a confidential in-depth conversation about the everyday experiences of intersex people, their views, and the potential changes they expect in society to ensure the welfare of intersex people. The interviewee will be free to talk about any aspect of their lives and experiences they want to share. The interview will take approximately 45-60 minutes. The participation will be confidential and anonymity will be protected at all stages of this study.
