It’s not the first time that people hook up at parties, remember the last party at Gianpula? a “HOT” guy comes over. He looks, you look back, he looks again, you nod, you wink, you bite your lip, he waves his head, you walk over, You start kissing, touching and end up in bed (if your’e lucky)… Sex was amazing, the guy couldn’t get enough. Little did you know that, that “HOT” guy was under the influence. Drugs are sometimes used to hook up, they can enhance sexual performance, can help remove shyness and facilitate interaction…. Perhaps you understand perfectly what I mean, as you could have been the “HOT” guy yourself.

Chemsex refers to intentional sex under the influence of psychoactive drugs, mostly, but not exclusively, among men who have sex with men. It refers particularly to the use of mephedrone, γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), γ-butyrolactone (GBL), and crystallised methamphetamine. (can we use the street name ex poppers etc) These drugs are often used in combination to facilitate sexual sessions lasting several hours, sometimes even days, with multiple sexual partners. The substances used induce euphoria, enhance libido and reduce some of our sexual and social inhibitions.

Chem sex parties do exist. During chemsex parties, people will engage in extended hours of sexual activities or extreme sex due to complete disinhibition. Although the word Chemsex is new, this practice is not a new phenomenon and these kind of parties in Malta have been going on for quite some time.

If one is taking part in such parties, it is extremely important to take care of the following:

1, Protect yourself: Alcohol, Ecstasy, cocaine and other stimulants will enhance one’s sexual confidence but also decrease the capacity to make rational decisions. Hence, make sure to have protection at hand.

2, You are doing drugs and losing it with people you might not know. Make sure you know some people who will be there and take note of exits and ways of leaving if you feel the need to.

3, Stimulants will make you feel a strong connection with some of the people present. It is however not the best place to start a relationship so remind yourself that. Remember that you are there for the sex and whatever you feel is induced by the high of what you’re on.

4, People change when they’re on drugs. Never underestimate other people’s intentions. If you feel uncomfortable leave.

5, Although doing drugs will enhance your sexual performance in the short term it will effect it negatively in the long term.

6, Research says that Two-thirds of gay men who engaged in chemsex said that they were unhappy. By far the most commonly cited reason for unhappiness was the lack of a long-term, romantic partner. While enjoying the benefits of chemsex, many felt that drugs were not enabling them to have intimate and emotionally connected sex that was sustained over the longer-term.
